How to Inspect Used Tires Before Buying

Learn how to check a used tire's size, date code, tread depth, wear pattern, sidewalls and repair history before buying.

Why a used tire needs a careful inspection

A used tire can have plenty of visible tread and still be a poor choice. Age, uneven wear, punctures, sidewall damage, improper repairs and internal problems all affect whether it may be suitable for further service. Some concerns are easy to spot in daylight; others become apparent only after the tire is removed from the wheel and examined by a qualified tire professional.

The goal of a pre-purchase inspection is to gather enough information to reject clearly unsuitable tires and identify anything that needs professional assessment. It is not a substitute for mounting, inflation and evaluation with proper equipment. Start by confirming the correct specification for the vehicle, then inspect the entire tire rather than focusing on tread depth alone.

Confirm the tire specification first

Read the tire-information placard on the vehicle, usually found near the driver's door opening, and consult the owner's manual or reliable manufacturer information. Record the specified tire size, load requirements and speed rating. The existing tire is useful for comparison, but it may not be the correct specification if a previous owner changed sizes.

A size such as P215/60R16 contains several details: tire type, nominal section width, aspect ratio, radial construction and wheel diameter. Additional markings identify load capacity and speed rating. Tires with the same wheel diameter are not automatically interchangeable. Width, overall diameter, load capability and clearance also matter.

If you are buying a mounted tire-and-wheel assembly, evaluate the two components separately. The tire can be the correct size while the wheel has the wrong bolt pattern, offset or center bore. Read the tire identification and date code

Look for the Tire Identification Number on the sidewall. The final four digits of a complete modern date code indicate the week and year of manufacture. For example, a code ending in 2422 indicates production during the 24th week of 2022. The complete code may appear on only one side, so the inner sidewall may need to be viewed.

Age matters because rubber and internal materials change over time, even when tread remains. Storage conditions, climate, use and maintenance all influence condition, so the date code does not tell the whole story. Compare the tire's age with guidance from the vehicle maker and tire manufacturer. If the code is missing, unreadable or uses an unfamiliar format, have a tire professional identify it instead of guessing.

For a set, check every tire. Matching brand and tread design do not prove that the tires were produced at the same time or used under the same conditions. Record each full size, service description and date code so differences are clear.

Measure tread depth across the full width

Use a tread-depth gauge rather than judging by appearance. Measure in several main grooves across the inner, center and outer portions of the tread, and repeat at multiple points around the circumference. This reveals both the remaining depth and whether the tire is wearing consistently. Tread-wear indicator bars are useful reference points, but a gauge provides a more complete comparison.

Applicable minimum tread requirements are only one consideration. A tire may be above a legal minimum yet perform poorly for the intended weather, have too little remaining life to be practical or show a wear pattern that signals another problem. Ask a tire professional what depth is appropriate for the vehicle, season and driving conditions.

Look for uneven wear

Compare every measurement. Greater wear on one shoulder can be associated with alignment or suspension conditions. Excess wear in the center or on both shoulders may relate to inflation history. Cupped, scalloped or diagonal patterns can point to wheel balance, alignment, suspension or other issues. These patterns do not diagnose the vehicle by themselves, but they can make a used tire undesirable and may indicate that the receiving vehicle should be checked before installation.

Run a flat hand lightly over the tread in both directions. Feathered blocks may feel smooth one way and sharp the other. Stop if you encounter exposed cord, sharp debris or loose material. Never buy a tire with cord or belt material showing.

Inspect both sidewalls closely

Examine the outer and inner sidewalls in bright, even light. Look for cuts, cracks, splits, bulges, bubbles, exposed cords, abrasion and areas that appear pinched or distorted. A bulge can indicate damaged internal structure and should not be treated as a cosmetic flaw. Sidewall punctures and impact damage require professional evaluation; many forms of sidewall damage are not repairable.

Fine surface marks can be difficult to interpret in photographs. Flexing, low light and tire dressing may conceal deterioration. Ask to see the tire clean and dry, and view it from several angles. If it is mounted, inspect the area near the rim for bead damage, gouges or evidence that the tire was driven while severely underinflated.

Check the bead area

The bead seals the tire against the wheel and holds it in position. With the tire unmounted, inspect both beads for torn rubber, deformation, exposed wire, tool damage and contamination. A mounted tire hides much of this area. If its condition cannot be established, make professional demounting and inspection part of the decision.

Search for punctures and previous repairs

Inspect the tread for nails, screws, plugs, patches and suspicious marks. Ask directly whether the tire has been punctured, lost air or received any repair. A proper assessment requires knowing the puncture's size and location and examining the inside of the tire. An exterior plug alone does not reveal the internal condition.

Repairs close to the shoulder or sidewall, overlapping repairs, large injuries and evidence of running flat deserve particular caution. Repair standards and tire-maker restrictions vary by injury and application. Have a qualified tire professional decide whether an existing repair is acceptable. Do not assume that a tire is sound merely because it currently holds air.

When the tire is off the wheel, inspect the inner liner for patches, wrinkles, cracking, exposed cords, rubber dust and discoloration. Creasing or loose material can be evidence of damage from low-pressure operation. Internal inspection is also the best opportunity to confirm how a puncture was repaired.

Decide whether the tires belong together

Vehicles can have specific requirements for tire matching, especially all-wheel-drive systems. Differences in size, construction, tread design and remaining circumference may affect handling or drivetrain operation. Confirm the vehicle manufacturer's guidance before combining one used tire with tires already on the vehicle.

For pairs or sets, compare brand, model, size, service description, construction, date codes, tread depth and wear pattern. Also confirm whether the tire has a directional rotation arrow or an asymmetric inside/outside marking. Directional and asymmetric tires must be positioned as specified. Never assume that four visually similar tires form an appropriate set.

Use a practical buying checklist

  • Confirm the vehicle placard specification and intended application.
  • Read the complete size, load and speed markings.
  • Find and record the date code on every tire.
  • Measure inner, center and outer tread at several points.
  • Reject exposed cords, bulges, deep cuts or obvious distortion.
  • Inspect both sidewalls, the shoulders and the bead areas.
  • Ask about punctures, repairs, air loss and low-pressure use.
  • Request an internal inspection when repair or impact history is uncertain.
  • Compare all tires in a proposed pair or set.
  • Confirm professional mounting, balancing and inflation plans.

Before payment, ask what is included and review the seller's current return or exchange terms. Have the tire professionally evaluated

A qualified tire shop can demount the tire, inspect the interior and bead, assess previous repairs, mount it on a suitable wheel, check for leaks and balance the assembly. After installation, use the vehicle maker's specified cold inflation pressure rather than the maximum pressure molded on the tire sidewall. Make sure tire-pressure monitoring equipment is serviced as needed. Stop driving and have the assembly checked if you notice air loss, vibration, pulling, noise or a change in handling.
